Health Services

The BMI School Infirmary shall be a strong partner of the school in ensuring a vibrant and healthy BMI Community through its Health Services. The main goal of the Infirmary is to deliver immediate nursing interventions to learners, teachers, and staff within the limits of its capacity and resources, as well as to keep and maintain the BMI Community healthy and safe from illnesses.

Medical Consultation and First Aid Treatments

Medical consultation and first aid treatments are administered to the learners by the school nurses at the school infirmary:

  • When learners become ill during the day (e.g., fever, stomach ache, headache, diarrhea, dizziness, vomiting, etc.)

  • When learners incur minor injuries, bruises, cuts, or wounds during school hours

  • When learners experience allergies (e.g., asthma, colds, cough, skin irritations) while in school

Reminders:

  • Parents/guardians are to inform the school if their child has a medical history that may have implications for school activities, plans, and goals upon enrolment.

  • Parents should inform the school or class adviser if a child is sick and has to stay home or in the hospital.

  • In the case of an illness, injury, or allergy requiring emergency services of a medical or dental doctor, the child’s parents/guardians will be notified immediately. If emergency transport is necessary, the school will contact emergency services and the school nurse or any staff member will accompany the child to the nearest hospital. Any expenses incurred in this situation will be the responsibility of the parents/guardians.

  • If learners are unable to continue classes due to illness, injury, or allergy (as stated in B.1.1 to B.1.3), the school nurse or class adviser will call the parents or guardians to fetch their child.

  • Learners must be fever-free and have stopped vomiting for at least 24 hours before returning to school.

Contagious Diseases

  • Learners with contagious diseases such as hand, foot, and mouth disease, measles, sore eyes, and chickenpox may return to school with a medical certificate from their physician after 2–3 weeks of quarantine, depending on the condition of the child.

  • If the learner has been exposed to any contagious disease or parasites (e.g., lice), please notify the school nurse upon enrolment. The school imposes a “No Head Lice Policy.”

Medications from Home to School

For learners who are required to take medication prescribed by a physician during the regular school day:

  • Parents or guardians should give the medicines, along with the doctor’s prescription (including method, amount, and time schedule), to the school nurse and not directly to their child.

  • In case the school nurse is not available, the parent/guardian may endorse the medication to the class adviser, who will then endorse it to the nurse on duty.

Immunization Requirements

BMI requires all learners to be immunized against certain diseases unless exempt for medical or personal reasons. At the time of registration/enrolment, the school requires proof that the child has received all currently due immunizations.

Children entering Kindergarten must have:

  • DTaP (4 doses meet the requirement if at least one was given on or after the 4th birthday)

  • Polio (3 doses meet the requirement if at least one was given on or after the 4th birthday)

  • Hepatitis B (Hepa B)

  • MMR (first dose on or after the 1st birthday)

  • Varicella

Check with your pediatrician, family physician, or medical clinic to make sure your child is fully immunized. Your child may be excluded from attending school if these requirements are not met.

Physical Assessment / Examination

Quarterly physical examinations are given to all learners from Preschool to High School. Parents/guardians should take note of the observations and recommendations provided for immediate action/intervention. Results are placed in the child’s communication notebook.

To address any physical and emotional well-being concerns of students, upper extremities (arms, wrists, hands) and lower extremities (legs, ankles, feet) will be visually inspected for bruises, scarring, or wounds.

The Quarterly Physical Examination includes:

  • Weight and height measurement

  • Vision testing

  • Hair, ears, teeth, and nails inspection

  • Visual inspection of upper and lower extremities
